Lucas Czech enjoys maiden victory, tops trials to Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes

Lucas Czech (#7) edges KR Showboat (#8) to set the fastest time—350 yards in :17.793—from four trials on January 31 to the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes, scheduled for February 22

David Munguia’s Lucas Czech enjoyed his Los Alamitos debut, as the colt by Corona Czech broke his maiden while also posting the fastest qualifying time to the $100,000 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes on January 31 at the Orange County track.

Ridden by Ramon Sanchez and trained by Adriana Aceves, Lucas Czech won the first of four trials after he flew to the early lead and continued strongly to neck victory from there .He finished with the top time of the night of :17.793. Lucas Czech has now hit the board in all three of his career starts, two of which had come in the Northern California racing circuit.

Lucas Czech was second in his racing debut during the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meet on July 3, and also ran third in a maiden race at Santa Rosa. There was no denying him at Los Alamitos, as he took the control early on before going the final 220-yard in a nice clocking of :09.66. Lucas Czech will now lead the way in the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes final to be held here on Sunday February 22.

The second and third fastest qualifiers also came out of this trial. Sally and David Kidd’s KR Showboat was the runner-up in this race, but was the second fastest qualifier in a time of :17.823. Felix A. Gonzalez’s A Mere Patron, a half-brother to 2007 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes winner A Mere Flash, ran third in this trial and third in the list of qualifiers with a time of :17.851.

Isaias Esparza’s Cruel Ride won his trial by a neck to earn his second straight win. Bred by John Andreini, the son of Fantastic Corona Jr covered the distance in seventh fastest time of the night of :17.918. He had previously enjoyed an easy daylight win here against a group of maidens on December 13. Cruel Ride posted runner-up efforts in his two other career starts when facing several highly-regarded competitors. He was second to the regally bred Sass Me Blue in a trial to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity on November 23 and before that he was second to recent Los Alamitos Winter Derby finalist Cartels Big Gun in a maiden race on November 1.

San Gregorio Racing Stables Inc. and World Champion Racing Stables LLC’s Runaway Fire was also a wire-to-wire winner after taking the third trial by a head in the fourth fastest clocking of :17.851. The Walk Thru Fire colt broke his maiden on this night, but he had previously competed in the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity. Eduardo Nicasio piloted the colt for trainer Mario Loza.
